Visualisation of Our Time space
The London Museum – due to open in Smithfield on November 28 – is inviting Londoners to become volunteer storytellers in their new ground floor space in the former General Market building.
“Underneath the market’s restored dome, Our Time will be a central hub featuring 13 large installations rooted in our city’s living memory. Everyone who enters will bring their own expertise on the London they know and will be able to join the conversation”.
London Locals volunteers will be given training to become storytellers in the Our Time space. The Museum says:
“Every Londoner has a story to tell. It might be the sound of a market waking up before sunrise, time spent at the local chicken shop after school, working on the city’s streets, or finding a place that felt like home. These everyday experiences help tell the story of London and can help London Museum visitors see the city through new eyes”.
The Museum are particularly keen to hear from people who:
- Have spent their working lives on London’s streets, such as lollipop people, cycle couriers or members of the emergency services.
- Have a strong connection to Smithfield and its history
- Have a social place in London that has shaped their life, identity or community
London Locals volunteers will:
- Connect visitors with objects and displays, either 1-1 or in small groups, sharing their own experiences of London.
- Spark conversations with visitors that help people connect with London’s history through their own lived experience.
- Help create a warm, welcoming atmosphere alongside museum staff and other volunteers.
“We are asking people to apply by filling out a short form HERE by the extended deadline of 30 September.
“You can read the full London Locals role description HERE and see a visual info deck HERE.

Note: Although the information deck lists early September dates for briefing, it would appear that the engagement team will organise further sessions. Introduction and selection days will be upon October 4 or 7.
